I have been a software engineer for about 20 years. My main area have been information systems. Our team have started a native Linux-based ERP software back in 1998. We haven’t found any frameworks for our needs back then, so we started our own. We made a major refactoring about 10 years ago, but the basic concept remained the same.
Much time have passed since we chose this path. We are now in the process of changing our architecture. The old system used our own form description language called FML which evolved into a frontend programming language. We have now turned to HTML5 technologies. We are also examining our biggest challenges from the past and try to create better solutions in the new system.
